ON a clear day with beautiful blue sky you may see an aircraft flying high, sometimes with a vapour trail hardly moving in the still air up there.
Your mind may drift, just for a moment, to that glorious feeling as your flight takes off to start a holiday.
Oh, for the exhilaration of leaving everyday worries behind and the joyful anticipation of what's to come!
With eyes thus upward and mind drifting in the care-free altitudes, I may begin to hum some happy tunes.
How about Come Fly with Me (music by James Van Heusen, lyrics Sammy Cahn, copyright 1958)? The Cold War was at its peak, Menzies was our prime minister and I was a little boy when this song had airplay during the 1960s.
I associate it with Frank Sinatra but the melody and lyrics are the flight path to a happy place, no matter who sings.
Other compositions that seem to have the same sort of power include:
< Another 'Sinatra song' that makes you want to pack your bags – Let's Get Away from It All.
< On a Clear Day, which induces the listener to "rise and look around" and "see forever ... more".
< What a Difference a Day Makes, a tribute to the warmth of the sun and the scent of flowers.
These four songs are part of my Music for Seniors program because of their magical mix of marvellous metaphors and melodies.
